It is used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Pioglitazone is not for treating type 1 diabetes.

It can cause headache, muscle pain, cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sinus pain, sneezing, sore throat.

Hypersensitivity, Diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hepatic impairment.

Risk of hypoglycemia, in combination with insulin or other oral agents

Increased risk of CHF; not recommended in symptomatic heart failure

Increased fracture risk in females

Delayed related weight gain reported with use; likely associated with fluid retention and fat accumulation

Drugs that may interact with this medicine include Aripiprazole, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, atorvastatin, erythromycin etc.
